How to Calculate Your True Solar Time for a Zi Wei Dou Shu Chart
To calculate your true solar time, start with your recorded clock birth time, adjust for your birthplace's longitude within its time zone, then apply the equation of time correction. The result is the real solar time your Zi Wei Dou Shu chart should be built from.
Calculating true solar time sounds technical, but the logic is simple once you see the two corrections involved. This guide walks through them, and explains why a tool usually does it for you.
How do you calculate true solar time?
You calculate it by taking your recorded clock birth time and applying two corrections: one for your longitude within your time zone, and one for the equation of time. The first accounts for where you sit inside a zone that all shares one clock; the second accounts for the sun's seasonal variation. Add or subtract these from your clock time, and you get true solar time.
Step 1: Start with your clock birth time
Begin with the time recorded on your birth certificate, in the local clock time of your birthplace. This is your starting point, the standardized time that needs correcting. Make it as precise as you can, since errors here carry through.
Step 2: Correct for longitude
Adjust for how far your birthplace sits from the central meridian of its time zone. Every degree of longitude east or west of that meridian shifts true solar time by four minutes. A city near the edge of a wide time zone can be over half an hour off from clock time on this factor alone.
Step 3: Apply the equation of time
Add the equation-of-time correction for your birth date, a value that varies through the year and can be up to roughly a quarter hour either way. It reflects the fact that the sun does not cross the sky at a perfectly even pace across the seasons. Tables and tools provide this value by date.
Why does a tool usually do this for you?
Most people never do this by hand, because a good chart tool performs both corrections automatically from your birthplace and date. Understanding the steps simply helps you trust the result and see why birth time accuracy matters so much. The math is just the bridge from clock time to the sun's real position.
What do you do with your true solar time?
Once you have it, that corrected time is what your Zi Wei Dou Shu chart should be built from, fixing your 12 palaces and 14 stars correctly. Start your chart and enter your exact birthplace so the conversion happens for you, then take the free quiz to explore your dominant star.
