How to Find Your Decade Cycle in Zi Wei Dou Shu

Your decade cycle, or great limit, is a ten-year period that moves through your palaces and colors that stretch of life. To find it, calculate your current cycle from your birth details and read the palace it currently activates alongside your base chart.

Your base chart shows your character; your decade cycle shows the timing — which themes are active in this stretch of life. This guide explains how to find and read it.

What is a decade cycle?

A decade cycle, traditionally called a great limit, is a ten-year period that activates one of your 12 palaces at a time. It overlays your base chart, coloring roughly a decade of life with the themes of whichever palace it currently occupies. It is how Zi Wei Dou Shu adds timing to an otherwise fixed chart.

How is your current decade cycle found?

Your current cycle is calculated from your birth details together with your age, and it moves through your palaces in sequence. Each cycle lasts about ten years before advancing to the next palace. Finding which palace is currently active tells you the broad theme of this period.

How do you read the active palace?

You read the cycle by looking at which palace it activates and which star sits there in your base chart. A decade activating The Career Palace emphasizes work and ambition; one activating The Partnership Palace emphasizes relationships. The base star plus the active palace together describe the chapter you are in.

How do transformations affect a decade cycle?

Each decade cycle also carries its own transformations, layered on top of your birth-year ones. A cycle that brings Abundance to a palace can open that area for a decade, while one bringing Friction marks a stretch of focused challenge. This is why the same person experiences different decades so differently.

How do I find my decade cycle?

You find it by generating your chart and letting it calculate your current great limit from your birth details and age. Take the free quiz to find your dominant star, then start your chart to see which decade cycle you are in now.
