To read your Chinese birth chart, start by generating it from your exact birth time, find your Self Palace and its dominant star, then read the stars in your key palaces and the transformations layered on them. This guide walks through each step in order.
Reading a Zi Wei Dou Shu chart looks intimidating at first, but it follows a clear order. This guide breaks it into simple steps you can follow even as a complete beginner.
How do you read a Chinese birth chart?
You read it step by step: generate the chart from your exact birth time, locate your Self Palace and dominant star, then read your key palaces and the transformations attached to them. The trick is not to read everything at once — you build the picture one layer at a time, starting with the single most important star.
Step 1: Generate your chart
Start by generating your chart from your exact birth date, time, and place. The birth hour is essential, since it fixes where your 12 palaces and 14 stars fall. Without an accurate time, the rest of the reading is unreliable. If you are unsure of your birth time, get as close as you can and treat the reading as approximate.
Step 2: Find your Self Palace and dominant star
Next, locate The Self Palace — the anchor of the whole chart — and see which major star sits in it. That star is your dominant star, the single biggest clue to your character, whether it is the authoritative Sovereign or another of the fourteen. Read its meaning first; everything else builds on it.
Step 3: Read your key palaces
Then look at the palaces for the life areas you care about most, such as The Career Palace for work or The Partnership Palace for relationships. For each, note which star sits there and read that star through the lens of that life area. This is where the chart starts to feel personal.
Step 4: Layer in the transformations
Finally, add the four transformations, which attach to specific stars based on your birth year. A star carrying Power gains drive; one carrying Friction marks an area of challenge and growth. These shift how the underlying star behaves.
How do I get started right now?
