Your birth chart shows your character; the decade cycle shows the timing, the chapters your life moves through. This page defines da yun and how to read it.
What is a decade cycle (da yun)?
A decade cycle, or da yun, is a roughly ten-year period that activates one of your 12 palaces at a time. While your birth chart is fixed, the decade cycle moves, lighting up a different palace each decade and coloring that stretch of life with its themes. It's how Zi Wei Dou Shu adds the dimension of time to a static chart.
How does a decade cycle work?
Each cycle settles on one palace for about ten years, then advances to the next in sequence. The star sitting in the active palace, whether The Sovereign or The Wolf, sets the tone for that decade. So the same person experiences very different chapters as the cycle moves.
What decides which palace is active?
Your birth details and current age decide which decade cycle you're in and which palace it activates. The starting point and direction depend on your chart, which is why an accurate birth time matters here too. Knowing your active palace tells you the broad theme of your current chapter.
How do transformations affect a decade cycle?
Each decade cycle carries its own four transformations, layered on top of your birth-year ones. A decade bringing Abundance to a palace can open that area for years, while one bringing Friction marks a stretch of focused challenge. This is why decades feel so distinct from one another.
How do you find your decade cycle?
You find it by generating your chart, which calculates your current da yun from your birth details and age. Learn to read it in how to find your decade cycle. Start your chart to see your current decade, or take the free quiz to explore your dominant star.
